Description
Eustreptospondylus was a medium-sized carnivorous dinosaur that lived in Western Europe during the Middle Jurassic period.
Its name means “greatly curved spine,” and it was given this name because it had a feature similar to that of a close relative.
Typical Physical Characteristics of a Theropod
Eustreptospondylus was a medium-sized carnivorous dinosaur, with a hip height of about 2 meters and a body length of about 6 meters.
Its appearance had the typical characteristics of a theropod.
Forelimbs
Relatively long forelimbs with three clawed fingers.
Tail
A long, whip-like tail.
Teeth
Teeth with well-developed serrations on their edges, despite being small for the size of its skull.
These features suggest that it was an agile hunter.
Coastal Ecosystem and Diet
The habitat of Eustreptospondylus was a series of small islands surrounded by coral reefs.
It is suggested that it was the apex predator of that region’s ecosystem. Since it lived by the sea, it likely fed on the carcasses of marine reptiles.
Although Eustreptospondylus is not a very well-known dinosaur, its discovery provides important clues for understanding the European ecosystem of the Middle Jurassic period.
