Description

Late Cretaceous North America.
Beneath the lands that are now Montana and Idaho, there was a dinosaur building “underground shelters” to protect the warmth of its family.

Overturning the common sense that “dinosaurs are creatures that stride across the surface,” “Oryctodromeus” has made a name for itself as the first “master burrower” in the dinosaur world.
This small dinosaur, measuring about 2 meters (6.6 feet) in length and weighing around 20 to 30 kg (44 to 66 lbs), was considered part of the hypsilophodontid family until recently, but is now classified in the Thescelosauridae family.

Its Scientific Name Means “Digging Runner”! Burrow Structure and Evidence

The scientific name Oryctodromeus literally means “digging runner.”
As this name suggests, they are a groundbreaking species revealed to be the first dinosaurs known to have “lived in burrows they dug themselves.”

The fossilized burrows that have been discovered vividly convey how they lived.

Size

About 2 meters (6.6 feet) long and 70 cm (27.5 inches) wide.

Structure

Rather than being a simple straight line, it curved twice along the way.

Evidence

The width of the burrow almost perfectly matches the body width of Oryctodromeus, leaving no doubt that they excavated it themselves rather than taking over another animal’s old nest.

Family Bonds Found in the Burrow: Memories of Warm Parenting

The greatest surprise brought by the discovery of this burrow was not simply the fact that they “dug holes.”
Deep inside the burrow, the skeleton of an adult (parent) was found together with the skeletons of two juveniles (children), each about 1.3 meters (4.3 feet) long.

This indicates that the parent and children met their end in the same place, strongly suggesting that they lived together as a family unit within the nest.
Unlike many reptiles that “lay and leave,” Oryctodromeus is believed to have been a devoted parent, raising its young in the safety of a self-dug burrow while protecting them from predators.
The fossils of a parent and children huddled together in the dark earth invite us to imagine that dinosaurs, too, shared warm family bonds.

A Hybrid Physical Ability for the “Surface” and “Underground”

The body of Oryctodromeus bears evolutionary traces adapted for a burrowing lifestyle.

Scapula (Shoulder Blade)

It had well-developed projections for muscle attachment, generating powerful force for digging through dirt.

Snout

Its snout had a shape well-suited for digging through soil.

A “Runner” That Didn’t Abandon Its Running Ability

However, there were limits to their excavation capabilities.
It is thought that they could not dig long tunnels like “fully fossorial animals” such as moles or wombats.
They remained “runners” and were bipedal dinosaurs.
If they specialized too much for underground life and their legs degenerated, they would not be able to forage for food or escape on the surface.

Therefore, their bodies remained adapted only to the extent that it did not sacrifice their “running ability.”
It is speculated that their burrowing ability was superior to that of hyenas or rabbits, but inferior to specialists like moles—making them, so to speak, a “hybrid of the surface and underground.”

Oryctodromeus in the World of Fiction

Finally, let’s introduce how this unique dinosaur is depicted in pop culture.

In the manga series “Jabberwocky,” Oryctodromeus appears as a dinosaur that underwent highly specialized evolution.
In the story, as a result of specializing in underground life, its eyes have degenerated, and instead, “ampullae of Lorenzini” (organs that sense weak electricity, like those found in sharks) have developed in its eye sockets.

The setting that they detect their surroundings like an insect’s antennae is strictly a bold, original interpretation (fiction) for the story, and is not a fact confirmed by actual fossils.
However, the fact that they stir such imagination is a testament to the mysterious appeal of their “burrowing” ecology.
