What was Deinonychus’s famous sickle claw most likely used for, according to recent research?
  • A Tearing its prey apart
  • B Driving the claw into prey to hold it down
  • C Climbing trees

B Driving the claw into prey to hold it down

The second toe of each hind foot of Deinonychus bore a huge sickle-shaped claw that could exceed 15 cm (6 inches) in length.
It was once thought that Deinonychus used this claw like a sickle, swinging it downward to slash its prey.
However, a more widely accepted theory today is that, like birds of prey such as eagles and hawks, it used the claw to drive into and pin down its prey.
